IrishFit Clinical Gait Analysis Lab

We have a wide range of options for Gait Analysis and advice on Running Shoe choice in our Shop and Clinic, see below for our various options.
Principles of Efficient, Injury Free Running
Although everyone has their own unique running style such as Paula Radcliffe’s Nodding Dog impression, every runner should adhere to some basic principles to avoid injury and perform to their best. These principles include
→ Control of bodyweight through the feet
→ Good posture
→ Co-ordination of movement
→ Smooth weight Transfer from one step to the next
→ Equal work done by each leg
At Irish Fit we do more than look at your shoes – we want to make you a better runner
Level 1 - Running Shoe Choice
Designed for helping you determine what running shoes would suit you best.
Includes: Foot Scan, Basic Leg Shape assesment, body weight assesment
Cost: Free
No appointment necessary
Level 2 - Advanced Running Shoe Choice / Foot Analysis
A more indepth analysis in our clinic with our Gait & Injury Specialist
You will be biomechanically assessed by our Running Injury Specialist
Full body mechanics and coordination tested - not just pronation
Analysed on our specialist gait treadmill
Tested first in your bare feet and then various types of shoes can be individually tested on the treadmill for best gait
Test whether your old insoles / orthotics are needed and which shoe is best matched with them
If we don't have the shoes you need / want in stock we will give you a print out of the specific shoes and brands best suited to your needs.
Muscular balance and flexibility also tested
Time: 30 - 45mins
Cost: 50 euro - Includes a 10 euro voucher to use in the shop

Level 3 Injury Prevention / Assessment Analysis ...
A full body running analysis ideal for anyone
- taking up running
- increasing their running
- having recurring injury problems
We assess you for |
Information you receive |
|
- Strength program to improve posture and movement control
|
- Control of weight through the feet
|
- Suitable shoe list and insole advice
|
|
- Whether changing your technique would be an advantage
|
- Why your injury keeps recurring
|
- Reasons why you get the injury and the what you should do next to treat it and beat it
|
The effectiveness of shoes and insoles can be undermined if you are not strong enough to maintain a good running posture or properly control the running movements.
All the information is given in a detailed report along with strength work and training advice to improve your running experience.
If you are suffering from chronic injury then the report can be used to help your physio decide on the best course of treatment
In this analysis you get fully body marked and videoed from the front, the side and the back.
You get a detailed print out of specific running shoes that would suit your needs as well as a list of specific exercises and stretches in a detailed report after the analysis.
Excellent for people who have a chronic injury or else people who want t identify areas of weakness and help prevent any injuries from occuring later on.
Time: 1.5 hours
Cost: 120 euro
You need to make an appointment for this analysis: 01-2846106
Level 4 Running Efficiency Analysis ..
Running is not only about pounding out the miles it’s about the quality of the work too, so in this analysis we look at how to improve
- Posture and Technique
- Training Schedule and Composition
- Recovery Strategies
- Shoe and Insole needs
- Strength and Flexibility Requirements
- Oxygen uptake at a given running speed for 10 mins
Following this analysis we give you a 12 week training plan after which we retest your oxygen uptake to see your improvement in running efficiency.
Time: 1.5 hours
Cost: 150 euro

Listed below are some of the ways we use to identify a personalized strength and flexibility program which can help alleviate current problems and reduce the chance of re-injury at a later date. This service is beneficial for athletes across a broad spectrum of sports. It should be considered an essential part of pre-season training.
Assessment of pelvic stability, crucial in deciding whether foot pronation is a symptom of muscular imbalance at the hips or due to weakness of the dynamic stabilizers of the Medial longitudinal Arch

The difference between the amount of foot pronation between barefoot and shod conditions. From this we can identify the ideal shoes and or orthotics to reduce injury risk and enhance comfort during your run.

Amount of rotation at the foot to determine whether the progression of bodyweight over the foot is occurring in an efficient and controlled manner or whether the foot position is placing excess strain and or rotation on the limb.
Efficiency
Although research is ambiguous as to the ideal running technique and posture, some parameters are regarded as a must for reducing the energy cost of distance running.

If you land too far ahead of yourself the posteriorly directed GRF (ground reaction force) will be increased which reduces momentum carried forward through the swing phase.

Peak knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion which are necessary for shock absorption should occur simultaneously before mid-stance so as not to interfere with the propulsion phase.

The timing of lifting the heel in the push off phase along with the amount of plantarflexion at the ankle joint determines the strength of the push off. With up to 50% of the push off power coming from the plantarflexors (calf muscles) this can impede your efficiency and cost you extra energy.
Performance & Long Term Injury Identification
The body is a multi segment entity which during performance of any skill needs synchronized integration of all the segments to produce a controlled and injury free movement. The amount of rotational or shear stress placed on the joints can be the most detrimental to performance and health of a joint so our full in depth analysis focuses on the timing between rotation of the limb and the flexion and extension moments of the joints.

The example graph above shows the coupling between internal rotation of the tibia with knee flexion with a downward slope representing internal rotation and flexion respectively. As can be seen between phases 5 and 7, which corresponds to midstance, the knee begins to extend in preparation for push where as the internal rotation is delayed. This creates a rotation stress on the knee which can result in patellar tendonitis, chondromalacia patella (runner’s knee) as well as injuries in other parts of the leg.
Coupling between the knee, hip and ankle joints can also be investigated from which movement anomalies can be detected and thereby controlled.
Our Gait Analysts are also avid runners themselves.
We are now taking appointments for our Gait Analysis lab,
